The Municipal Choir School

In March 2002, at the end of the eighth Habaneras Junior Contest, the mayor of Torrevieja, Mr. Pedro Hernandez Mateo asked the Municipal Board of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest to create a Choir School that would have two basic aims. Firstly, to instil the love of choir music to children and habaneras in particular; secondly, the school should be a centre that goes out of the way to facilitate the entrance and integration to children not born in Torrevieja and to enlighten their knowledge on our local musical culture.

Following these premises, the School opened its doors during the month of November that same year, 2002, with some amazing numbers: a total of 140 children, from 9 different nationalities and between the ages of 4 and 16.

Nowadays, the Municipal Choir School has over 160 students and continues to work in favour of the integration of different nationalities and has increased the age groups, which is now between 4 and 18.

All the management of this School is entirely made from the Municipal Board of the International Habaneras Contest.
