THE COMPETITION PHASE OF THE HABANERAS CONTEST ENDS WITH AN AMAZING LEVEL OF THE PARTICIPATING CHORALS

Saturday, July 23rd 2016

The audience gives the choirs that close the competition phase of the 62nd edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest a deserved ovation.

Tomorrow, we will know the winners of this contest edition, which is considered one of the best of the last decade so far. This year the contest has brought together important choirs both in the habaneras and the polyphony category.

The contest comes to an end with the premiere of the habanera "No cierres los ojos" by Josu Elberdin

Torrevieja, 24 July, 2016.-

Thanks to the performing quality and to the staging, we can describe as excellent the chorals that have participate in the 62nd edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja, possibly the best one of the last decade. Yesterday, the competition phase ended to give way to the great gala that will take place tonight.

The chorals accepted the changes introduced by the Municipal Board of Habaneras, that decided to alternate the performance of the habaneras and polyphonies in order to give agility to the contest. This decision made it easier for the choirs to change their clothes and to tune the musical instruments that the majority of the choirs have played in the polyphonic category. Generally, the polyphonic pieces have had folkloric features, which helped bring the audience closer to the chorals home countries.

Yesterday, those who bought a season ticket were able to choose the best choir of this edition. The audience prize is worth EUR 2.000.

The choirs from Portugal, Spain and Puerto Rico participated In this last night of competition. All of them performed the obliged habanera "A mi añoransa" by José Cerdán and Francisco Vallejos, two habaneras of free choice, and two polyphonic pieces.

The Youth Choir of the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon (Portugal), conducted by Filipa Palhares, which won the first prize of the Youth Habaneras Contest last year, performed two wonderful habaneras and two polyphonies. The choir, composed of young women, sang barefoot the obliged habanera in 2002 "El sabor de una habanera" with lyrics by Maite Lorenzo and music by Armando Bernabéu, and "Cubana y española" by the master Ricardo Lafuente. This habanera is a Spanish tanguillo transformed into an habanera which last night was very well received by the audience.

The second participating choral was the Vocal Group "Elkos" from Pamplona, Navarra (Spain), conducted by Carlos Gorricho. The performance of the habanera "No me cierres los ojos", composed by Josu Elberdin to this choir, stood out.

In the modality of polyphony, the chosen pieces were by the master Josu Elberdin. The choristers of "Elkhos" dressed traditional costumes of the Navarra province and performed in Euskera "Izar Ederrak" a beautiful love story, and “Segalariak” with defined rhythm in the deep voices.

The performance of the choir San Juan Bautista Abesbatza from Leioa, Vizcaya (Spain), conducted by Basilio Astulez, was absolutely perfect and very applauded. The group, composed of 40 people, sang a popular and well known habanera, "Por el mar", by Isabel Pareja and Manuel Moreno, which was an obliged piece in 1972. The choir also sang “Linda Mulata” by Francisco Langarita, an awarded habanera in the composition category of the contest. However, the one that got the standing ovation of the audience was the obliged habanera of this year. In the modality of polyphony, the choir sang a very difficult piece, "Water night", by Eric Whitacre, whose lyrics are a poem by Octavio Paz that the musician adapted  and dedicated to his friend Bruce Mayhall. The choral also performed "Ametsetan", by Javier Busto, with folkloric features. The work has four different parts that recreates the environment of a romería in a holiday of an Irish town.

The evening event came to an end with the sweet performance of the habaneras by the University Choir Coralia, respecting the aspects gather in the scores. The choir, conducted by Carmen Acevedo, sang the habanera "Niña Mersé" by Manuel Tamayo and Federico Moreno, and "Tú, mi barco y el mar" by Ángel Roca and Gregorio García, a piece in which habanera, love and sea collide. In the category of polyphony, the choir performed “El amor y la locura” by Alejandro Yagüe, one of the most important choral composers of our country. The second piece was "Elena, Elena" by Cortijo y su Combo, with arrangements by Johanny Navarro. In this latter one, the choir included choreographies and musical instruments such as tambourines and güiras.

At the end of the evening, the audience who bought a season ticket chose the best choral of the contest, which will get the Audience Prize of EUR 2.000. The winner will be revealed tonight.

Today, takes place the Great Choral Gala, where choirs that have participated in the contest will perform habaneras and polyphonies that will be previously chosen by the members of the municipal board. We also will know the winners of this edition. The total value of the prizes is more than 39.000.

Applause and ovations for the chorals in the third night of competition

Torrevieja, July 22, 2016.-

In the third day of the contest, the night turned into a remarkable night because of the high artistic quality of the participating chorals, which received excellent reviews by the specialized audience.

The audience of the Eras de la Sal gave the four choirs from America, Europe and Asia a deserved ovation. They appreciated the changes made by the Board, which decided to change the order of the performances of the habaneras and the polyphonic pieces, giving dynamism and virtuosity to the contest, and time to the contestants so they could change their clothes and even use instruments.

In the fourth night of the contest and third in the competition phase, the participating choirs caught the attention of the audience of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest, which reach this year its 62nd edition. Due to the high artistic quality the evening was an absolute success.

The chorals from Spain, Indonesia, Ukraine and Cuba amazed the audience with their voices in the performance of the obliged habanera "A mi añoransa" by José Cerdán and Francisco Vallejos, as well as in the performance of the habaneras of free choice of and the polyphonic pieces.

The female choir "Aurum" from Luanco (Asturias), conducted by Elena Rosso Valiña and made up of young people between ages 15 and 30, sang "Habanera salada", a piece composed in the mid-1970's by the master from Torrevieja Ricardo Lafuente. The second habanera was "Verde mar" by the composer of Murcia Bernadette Khune. This work was written ten years ago and keeps the essence of the habanera but with a new style that the Asturian choir was able to capture when they performed it. In the category of polyphony, they performed a classical piece, "Ascendit deus", by J. Berkey and "D'Alborada" a work by the Galician composer Julio Domínguez that moved us to the Asturian lands.

The Choir "Parahyangan" of the Catholic University in Bandung, Indonesia, dazzled with their voices, their sound, the staging and their costumes. They received the applause of the audience both in singing habaneras and polyphony.

The choir performed the habaneras "El ausente" composed by Carmen Ortiz and Jorge López, and "Tú" by Fernán Sánchez and Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes. However, when it performed the obliged habanera "A mi añoransa" respecting very faithfully the score, that proved the excellence of this masterpiece. In the category of polyphony, the choir shone not only because of their voices but also because of  the colorful clothing they wore and the instruments they played. They also performed "Gloria Patri", an anonymous piece of the XVI century whose arrangements were made by Budi Susanto Yohanes, and "Yamko Rambe Yamko", a polyphonic piece with folkloric colours that the choir accompanied with percussion instruments and a choreography. This  is a very popular work of the province of Papua whose arrangements were made by Avip Priatna / Ivan Yohan.

In the third day of the contest, the chamber choir "Khmelnytskyi" from Ukraine, created in 1988 and conducted by Ihor Tsmur, made a difference, feeling the habanera as a song to dance to. When the choral performed "La paloma" by Sebastián Iradier and arranged by Massotlti LittleL, they used red fans in the choreography. The choir achieved the involvement of the audience in the habanera "Rosita de un verde palmar", a piece whose arrangements were made by the master M. Martinez Guirao. In the polyphonic category we heard “Crucifixus” by Antonio Lotti, and . Cmenypko.

The evening came to an end with the performance of the choir "Entrevoces" form Havana, Cuba. This mixed choir, recognized worldwide for its artistic excellence, was created in 1981 by its conductor Digna Guerra Ramirez, and participated in the competition in 2004. Yesterday the choir sang "A tu lado" by Matías Antón and Javier Busto, perhaps it has been one of the best performance made so far. This habanera was the obliged habanera in the 50th edition of the contest, and is still a rooted piece in the city. The second habanera of free choice, was "Morir por ti" by Leonardo Barquilla Luján. In the polyphonic category, we heard "Gloria Patri" by Budi Susanto, and "El manisero" by Moisés Simons, arranged by Jorge Martinez. With this piece the Cuban roots reached the contest and moved the audience who did not hesitate to applaud after the performance.

On tomorrow evening, choirs from Portugal, Spain and Puerto Rico will perform.

HIGH LEVEL AMONG THE CHORALS THAT PARTICIPATE IN THE SECOND NIGHT OF THE COMPETITION IN THE HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY CONTEST

Thursday, July 21st 2016

A lovely evening, full of quality and variety among the chorals, the use of musical instruments enhances the polyphonic pieces.

Choirs from Poland, Moldavia, Argentina and Spain participated in the second evening of the contest in the 62nd edition of the Habaneras and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja.

Tomorrow chorals from Asturias (Spain), Indonesia, Ukraine and Cuba will perform.

Torrevieja, july 21, 2016.-

Chorals from America and Europe performed on the second night of the competition of the 62nd International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja. Choirs from Poland, Moldova, Argentina and Spain, performed the obliged habanera "A mi añoransa", two habaneras of free choice, and two polyphonic pieces.

The Choir of the University of Technology of Gdansk- Poland- conducted by Mariusz Mróz was the first choir to perform. The mixed choir was created in 1965 and has, among other prizes, the gold medal in the category of contemporary music of the 53rd International Choral Competition "Seghizzi" in Gorrizia (Italy).

This choir performed the habanera "Tú,  mi barco y el mar" by Angel Roca and Gregorio García, which was the obliged habanera in 1987. They also performed the "Habanera salada" by Ricardo Lafuente.

The performance of polyphonic pieces like "Beatus vir sanctus martinus" by Pawel Lukaszewski, and "Lond road" by E. Esenvalds was remarkable, and thanks to instruments like flutes and ocarinas the performance was also delicate.

The use of musical instruments in the polyphonic category and the choreographic compositions, make this edition different than the previous ones.

Secondy, the Moldovan choir of same voices Cantemus, directed by Ceausov Denis. It was created in 2007, and is made up of young people with ages between 11 and 22 years. They performed the habanera of great complexity "¿Dónde están las gaviotas?" By Ricardo Lafuente, and "Te llevaré" by Joaquín Benito de Lucas y Albert Alcaraz.

Regarding the polyphonies, the chosen pieces were "Ciocirlia" by Ion Enache, and "Rügen erasoaldia" by the Alicante-born composer Albert Alcaraz. The youngsters, with their voices and body movements, introduced us to the terrible event of the Bombing of Gernica. Sirens were heard, voices in German, bombs, sounds produced by them that they themselves choreographed at the same time they interpreted the piece.

The choir Liberae Voces from Argentina, directed by Matías Armando Bustafán, performed in third place. A small chamber choir with a lot of sound and toned voices.
The choral performed two well-kown habaneras: "A tu lado" by Matías Antón and Javier Busto, and "Torrevieja", which was obliged in 1989, by master Ricardo Lafuente. They incredibly performed the polyphonic pieces with a noticeable folkloric style. The tango was present this evening in the two works "Nada" by Horacio Sanguinetti and José Dames, with arrangements by Eduardo Ferraudi, and "El chulengo" by Óscar Valles and José Zabala, with arrangements by Ricardo Mansilla.
The evening was closed by the Coro de Jóvenes de Madrid, the most numerous in this edition, which is formed by 80 young men and women of ages 16 to 25. This choir is directed by Juan Pablo de Juan.

The choral performed the habanera "Al compás de habanera" by Evaristo Pérez García, and "La mulata soñadora" by Ricardo Lafuente. The latter one is a challenge for the interpreters because it is one of the most complex works by the Torrevieja-born master. As a curiosity, we have to mention that the author had to wait 40 years to be able to listen his work in the voices of a choral.

During this evening, the the choir from Madrid also stood out in the performing of the polyphony, especially "Cloudburst" by Eric Whitacre and Octavio Paz. It is a work of great technical complexity in which, by means of their voices, expressions and instruments, the young performers made the audience believe that they were in the middle of a storm. The second chosen polyphony was "The conversation of Saul" by Z. Randall Stroope, which recalls the persecution of the Chirstian by Saul.

This choral took part in the Youth Habaneras Contest of Torrevieja of 2012, and their director won the first pize to best direction in the International Habaneras and Polyphonic Contest of 2014. This choir participates in several events of social dimension such as "A Kiss For All The World" or "Un Juguete, Una Ilusión"
Tomorrow there will be performances of four choirs from Asturias, Indonesia, Ukraine and Cuba.

CHORALS FROM THREE COUNTRIES IN THE FIRST DAY OF THE COMPETITION IN THIS 62ND EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY CONTEST

Wednesday, July 20th 2016

Chorals from Latvia, Spain and Ukraine prove, in the first day of the competition, their high performing level in the singing of habaneras and polyphony, especially the choral from Valencia.

The 62nd edition starts with the performance of 11 chorals from around the world.

Tomorrow four choirs from Poland, Moldova, Argentina and Spain will perform.

Torrevieja, July 19, 2016

The 62nd edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest, comes up to the competition phase of the contest with the participation of chorals that showed a high performing level in the habaneras and polyphony singing.

The university Mixed Choir “Juventus” from Riga (Latvia), the chamber choir “Ad Libitum” from Quart de Poblet, Valencia (Spaim) and the Municipal Choir “Legenda” from Drogobych (Ukraine) sang the obliged habanera "A mi añoransa", whose lyrics were written by the master José Cerdán and whose music was created by Francisco Vallejos. They also performed two habaneras of free choice and two polyphonic pieces.

During the first day popular habaneras, which were pretty well performed by three choirs, were heard. They all respected the rhythm and the taste of the habanera "Torrevieja", but above all we have to highlight the performance of the Chamber Choir "Ad Libitum" from Quart de Poblet (Valencia).

Regarding of the polyphony, the chorals have lived up to the expectations of the contest, thanks to the performance of extremely difficult pieces such as Xivarri’s by Albert Alcaraz. Some of them played instruments and made choreographies.

The first choir to sing was the university Mixed Choir “Juventus” from Riga (Latvia), conducted by Janis Petrovski. The group performed in a very nimbly and dinamic way the obliged as well as the free choice habaneras ‘Aunque no te vi llegar’ by Martas Valdés and ‘No lo esperes’ by Tomás Aragüés. The choir played with onomatopoeia in the polyphonic pieces " Kalesjla Debis’ " by Selga Mance and "Tjak" by Stephen Hatfield, making them more delicate to hear.

The second participant choral was the chamber choir "Ad Libitum" from Quart de Poblet, Valencia (Spain), conducted by Francesc Gamón Olmo, and it had less choristers than the previous one. This choir made a wonderful job, very sensitive and detailed.

With soft mediterranean voices and a unique style, they perfectly performed the obliged habanera, but also the habaneras "Al compás de habanera" by Evaristo Pérez García, and "Torrevieja" by Ricardo Lafuente; as well as the polyphonic pieces "Xivarri`s Songs" by Albert Alcaraz and "Rytmus" by Ivan Hrusovsky.

The third group, the Municipal Choir "Legenda" from Drogobych (Ukraine), conducted by Nataliya Samokishyn, have participated in three occasions in the contest. Their voices, with a great sonority, delighted the audience. They performed the habanera "Marinero" by Miguel Asins and "Mi querida Torrevieja" by José Francisco Sánchez. In the polyphony category, they selected the pieces "Vesnianska" by Volodymyr Stetsenko and "Kupala" by Yevhen Stankovych.

Very remarkable was the clothing of the chorals. The choir from Valencia wore elegant suits, and the Latvian and Ukrainian  choirs changed their clothes to typical clothing of their countries when the performed the polyphonic pieces.

This year, the Municipal Board of Habaneras changed the order in the performing of the different styles, opting for alternating the habaneras and the polyphonies, to give freshness to the contest and to give time to the contestants so they could change their clothes.

This year the obliged habanera has been arranged by Ramón Mínguez Vallejos, something that has permitted the three participant chorals to be able to perform it in a easy and comfortable way, despite the technical difficulties.

In the tomorrow evening event four groups from Portugal, Moldova, Argentina and Spain will participate.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE MUNICIPAL BOARD OF HABANERAS WOULD LIKE TO FOMENT THE TURISM A BY MEANS OF THE HABANERA

Tuesday, July 19th 2016

Madrigal Singers, considered the best choir of the world, did not disappoint the audience.

The president of the Municipal Board of Habaneras affirms that Torrevieja has to be promoted through the habanera

The 62nd edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja started with the out-of-the-competition performance of the Philippine choir.

Torrevieja, July 19, 2016.-

The president of the Municipal Board of Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolon, thinks that the city has to be advertised through the habanera "in order to give more dimension to the tourist attractions of the city.

Dolon made these declarations in the opening ceremony of the 62nd International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest that started yesterday with the performance of Madrigal Singers.

The President said that one of the main purposes of his Government Team is modernize the Contest "without losing the essence it had on the year 1955", year in which it was founded with national basis.

The first evening event of habaneras did not disappoint the audience that attended the premises of Eras de la Sal to watch the performance of Madrigal Singers from the University of the Philippines.

The choir is made up of a score of voices, it performed 14 pieces by composers of traditional music, Black spirituals, habaneras of Philippine origins, choral versions of pop music, and Spanish habaneras such as "Tú" and "A tu lado". These two latter pieces were the ones that excited the audience the most.

The members of Madrigal Singers performed almost all their musical pieces sitting in an semicircle without being conducted by their conductor Mark Anthony Carpio. In some songs, they used musical instruments such as guitar and percussion, and in others they made a choreography.

At the end of the concert, the Cultural Counsellor of the Cuban Embassy in Spain, Natasha Díaz-Arguelles, handed over a commemorative metope of the Contest to the conductor of the choir.

Today the Mixed University Choir 'Juventus' from Riga (Latvia), the Chamber Choir 'Ad Libitum' from Quart de Poblet (Spain) and the Municipal Choir 'Legenda' from Drogobych (Ukraine) will compete.

MADRIGAL SINGERS PERFORMS IN THE INTERNATIONAL HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY CONTEST OUT OF COMPETITION

Monday, July 18th 2016

"Madrigal Singers", the best choir of the world, is performing tonight in Eras de la Sal.

Torrevieja opens tonight the International Habaneras and Polyphony contest with the performance of "Madrigal Singers".

15 chorals from three continents come together in the premises of Eras de la Sal.

Torrevieja, July 18, 2016.-

Torrevieja opens today, Monday, the 62nd International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest with the performance out of contest of the choir 'Madrigal Singers' from the University of the Philippines, which is considered as one of the best choirs of the world.

The choir is formed by about twenty voices, and it is not its first time visiting Torrevieja. Its first time in the salt city was in 1998, when they performed out of contest in the sounding board of the Eras de la Sal. Later, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Contest, in the year 2004, "Madrigal Singers" took part in the contest and won the First Prize of Habaneras Juan Aparicio and the First Prize of Polyphony.

The programme Madrigal Singers have prepared for tonight is mainly based upon works by composers of coral Philippine tradition, as is the case of Ily Matthew Maniano; however, we will also enjoy versions of themes by Paul McCartney, by Elton John and by Mortin Lauridse, among others. In their repertoire, there are also two Spanish habaneras, "Tú" and "A tu lado", and another two of Philippine origins, "Sampaguita" and "Love".

The choir, created in 1963, is made up of students and professors of different departments of Philippine universities. They are specialized in "el madrigal", a secular musical form that flourished especially during the second half of the 16th century, losing its importance around the third decade of the 17th century, when it disappeared with the rising of new forms like opera.

At the end of the concert, the Cultural Counselor of the Cuban Embassy in Spain, Natasha Díaz-Argüelles will hand over a commemorative metope of the Contest to Mark Anthony Carpio, the conductor of the choir.

In this edition, fifteen chorals will participate: eleven from Europe, among them five from Spain, two from Ukraine and one from Portugal, Latvia and Moldova; three from America that come from Argentina, Cuba and Puerto Rico, and, finally, 1 from Asia, specifically from Indonesia.

The obliged habanera this year is "A mi añoransa" by the master José Cerdán and Francisco Vallejos.
